The way it used to be done. Note that the person the sign is addressed to is an honest person who might see some miscreants doing something wrong. You, the reader, are respected by the sign -- since the miscreants don't give a damn what the School Board wants them to do anyway.

Another alternative approach, in St. Louis. If you park your car here when there's snow, it gets towed and you pay a hefty fine -- but the sign has a smiling snowman on it. If they designed these signs today, they'd probably threaten to put you in prison.

Not really a threat, or at least not overtly. But will someone please explain to me how this is legal? Incidentally, there was in fact no checkpoint in evidence. On I-55/70/64 just east of St. Louis. *

This one makes sure that no law-abiding people in this building will have guns. The criminals by definition don't give a shit what's prohibited.
