Crime Statistics
It must be said that these statistics, being from 1999, represent a historic trough in U.S. crime rates. Most people attribute this to the general prosperity and full employment in the United States; others point out that we've got so many people in prison (another complaint altogether) that that's had an impact on crime rates.
In any case, I acknowledge that, while the USA might be no more violent than Canada in 1999, that it's much more violent, averaged over the last twenty years.
Here's where I got my data:
Statistics Canada - Population
Statistics Canada - Crimes by type of Offence
U.S. Bureau of the Census - Population
U.S. Department of Justice - Serious Violent Crime
